Epic's Top Ten

here's my top ten favourite:

1. Avast! Free Antivirus (http://www.avast.com/index)

While there are still a lot of companies which offer free antivirus protection, this Czech based company offers one of the most complete protection yet to be included in other free software. Attractive and handy features such as real-time anti-rootkit protection, Web-Rep(provide website rating), Boot-time Scanner, Auto Sandbox, silent gaming mode, and avast Real-time Shields, etc. make it an unbeatable choice for home users. The scanning is effective and the resource usage is minimal.

Though recently heavily criticized for its rapid upgrade circle, Mozilla Firefox is still my favourite in web browsing. It's one of safest browser and reputable web browser that you can get. It not only makes web browsing safer, but also make it more enjoyable. It's the only web browser that allows you to personalize the interface according to your own choice. Besides that, there are more than thousands of free add-ons available in the Firefox Add-ons section which can help to enhance your security and browsing experience. It's interesting to note that it offers the widest variety of add-ons among all browsers in the world. Although there are some complaint regarding the slow browsing speed, lag and crashes in the previous version, Mozilla team learned the lesson quickly and resolve the problems in their latest update, Mozilla Firefox 6. There are more to come in the coming update release. This makes it one the best web browser that you can rely on.

This is my personal favourite. Those who knows me will always remember how much I recommended this software. This is the secret of my smooth running computer, and this remedy for most of the sluggish computer out there. CCleaner helps to clean up almost all the junks in your beloved computer. The cleaning option is fully customizable. You can choose the area of cleaning as well as excluding folders that you don't want to clean. Besides that, secure deletion is available, with 4 level to choose from. It also include an effective registry cleaner. Now, you can also download and install CCEnhancer http://thewebatom.net/software/ccenhancer/ to enhance the power of CCleaner.

Everyone knows that defragmentation is important, and there so many well known application that do the job, including Smart Defrag, Auslogic Disk Defrag, Defraggler, etc. So why choose MyDefrag? MyDefrag has a simple UI, and direct selection to choose from. It's simple interface and explicit explanations given beside each options make it easy enough for users to understand. There's also a guide to help you decide which option to choose. The effect of this software is impressive, and it's advisable to use it as frequent as a week once for best result. The only glitch I found from this software is that it automatically wipe out all your windows 7's system restore points. So if you are relying heavily on System Restore, please remember to create a new system restore point every time after you've defragged you system.

5. Download Accelerator Plus (http://www.speedbit.com/

Downloading can be very annoying when your internet connection is slow and unstable. With the fear of disconnecting and the need to restart the whole download is even more depressing, especially when your file is large. There's a free solution for this problem, we call it DAP. The software developers of DAP are courteous enough to offer a free option to the users, instead of forcing everyone to pay for the service.  The free version is handy enough, with the resume and pause download functions included. It also speed up your downloads by seeking for other alternative sites if the original server is slow. For that, it deserves to be on the top 10 list.

Soluto is amazing. It is more accurate and effective than any of the startup delayer that I've ever tried. And since the first time I met her, I realised I can't live without her. When first installed, this software will analyze your system and show you a clear picture of how many startup components that you've actually had on your system in the section called Chop Boot. It also provide options for you to execute, either in boot, delay or pause. Beside the options, is a pie chart which shows you what other Soluto users normally do with that particular startup, so you won't accidentally pause some unknown but important components. Besides Boot and Startup optimization, Soluto also includes a Lighten Web Browser function, which you can have a clear view of your add-ons and decides which one to keep or disable. Lastly is the Heal Crashes section, although I still haven't notice any significant difference from this function, it's still no harm trying. It supposedly automatically analyze your app every time it crashes, and seek for solution.

Tera copy is an unbelievable software. It speeds up your file copying process and has the ability to queue up your files if you copy multiple files at the same time. By doing so, your files will be set to copy one by one, instead of all at the same moment. This can eliminate the risk of traffic congestion, and reduce the risk of damaged files, at the same time, improve the copying speed. Moreover, it also has a file transfer resume and pause option. This extremely useful if your computer has met a power failure or system error that requires it to reboot. This will save you from repeating the whole file transferring process.

8. Rockmelt Browser (http://www.rockmelt.com/main.html)

I used to imagine the convenience of having a browser that integrates social networking functions. It's so annoying to open a new tab and sign in facebook just to check for updates. What about Twitter? Youtube? and my blog??? Now, all my dream comes true with Rockmelt Browser. It's not just a browser, it includes a Facebook chat bar on the left, where you can view who is available for chat anytime, even when you're not on facebook. Besides that, you can also view your Twitter updates on the right side of your browser. Besides that, you can also add apps such as Wiki app, Blogger app, Youtube app facebook feed app, etc. These apps help you to trace for any single update available. Furthermore, the facebook site is integrated right into the browser. On the top left, is the fb toolbar, where you can click on your fb profile picture which will link you straight into your fb profile. Besides that, you can also view notifications and messages by clicking the icons on the toolbar, exactly the way fb functions. This browser is Chrome based, so it's speedy enough for normal web browsing. However, I would still recommend Firefox as your primary browser for downloads and online transactions for maximum security. Rockmelt will work well as your secondary social networking browser.

This is one of the best free video player available that fully support all popular video format such as avi, wmv, mp4, mkv, m4a, flv, rmvb, etc. Despite being a China based software, it's extremely stable and free of advertisements. I especially favour its ability to automatically search for suitable subtitles for the movie that I'm playing. But you need to be careful not to download the Chinese language version because the software will automatically download Chinese subtitle instead of English. Even though some times there might be some failure in searching for correct subtitle, but the overall result is quite satisfying.

How sure are you that your laptop has overheated? While it is important to ensure that your laptop is working in the right temperature, it's hard for us to measure the temperature of our graphic card and processor using our bare hand. Hence, I always remember to install this amazing software to help me do the monitoring job. The software interface is clear enough, which includes the indication of GPU, HDD and CPU (core) temperatures. The temperature rise and drop depending the usage of your laptop. If you're playing high graphic games or watching HD movies, the GPU temperature rise. Besides temperature monitoring, you can also ask the software to help you adjust your laptop fan speed according to different situations. Besides that, other more advanced functions are also included, but it is not for the faint-hearted. Lastly, it's worth to note that if you want to continue monitoring your laptop temperature while you are performing other tasks, you can minimize it where it'll turn into a GPU temperature indicator located at the notification area of your taskbar.
